Online Lottery Gambling in the United States
The history of the lottery in the United States has been a roller coaster ride. There have been legal changes, and some states are banning lotteries. However, it has remained one of the most popular ways for citizens to gamble. And now, some states are looking to add online lottery offerings to their gambling services.
In the United States, there are 48 jurisdictions that provide state-wide lotteries. These are composed of 45 states and the District of Columbia, and include Puerto Rico. Powerball, the largest jackpot lottery in the world, is provided in nearly every jurisdiction. But, other states do not offer lotteries, citing religion and other objections. Alaska, Hawaii, Mississippi, and Nevada are among the remaining states without a lottery. Nonetheless, several Northeastern states are considering legalizing and expanding their lottery services.
Online lottery solutions have become increasingly popular, as they offer convenience, accessibility, and security. They can be played on desktops, tablets, and mobile devices. Moreover, they provide a real-time experience. Lastly, they give players the ability to make secure payments with digital transactions.
Online lottery systems offer a higher return on lower investments. They also are more secure, and they can be played by any person who is at least 18 years old. A few states have already introduced electronic lotteries, and a handful of others are considering expanding their service offerings to include Instant Games.
New Hampshire is the first state to establish a lottery in 1964. It offers several draw games, including Mega Millions. Also, the state offers e-Instant games, which can be played on smartphones and desktops.
The Idaho Lottery is another multi-state lottery that started in 1989. It is part of the Multi-State Lottery Association. It has in-house and multi-state games, which can be played by residents of any of the states.
Another multi-state lottery is the Wisconsin Lottery. Several draw games are available, as well as three in-house games. Some of the proceeds from the lottery go to the general fund, while the rest goes to public school construction, renovations, and scholarships.
Rhode Island has been in the process of legalizing an online lottery. They launched it in the year after a constitutional amendment to allow for it. They also operate a physical lottery, which is sold at licensed retail establishments in the state.
California started its own lottery in 1984. It is now a charter member of the Multi-State Lottery association. As a member of the Multi-State Lottery organization, they can offer a variety of games to their residents, from the Powerball to the Mega Millions.
The New Jersey Lottery offers seven draw games. Their jackpots range from $25 to $50,000. Other draw games include the Pick 3 and Pick 5; the latter is an in-house game with prizes ranging from $100 to $5,000.
Several other states have been trying to pass online lottery legislation, but have not yet achieved success. Massachusetts and Pennsylvania have passed bills, and several other Northeastern states are also considering doing so. However, there are some legal issues that could put the entire project on hold.
